Frequently asked questions

Is the Phonics Writing tool really free?

Yes — it's free, no signup, no paywall. Runs entirely in your browser. Built by teachers, for teachers.

Does this work on a tablet or interactive whiteboard?

Yes. The writing canvas supports finger, stylus, and mouse input on any modern browser — iPad, Surface, Promethean, etc.

Which languages does the audio work in?

Audio uses your device's built-in text-to-speech, so it works in any language your device supports — typically English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, and more.

Can students replay their writing?

Yes. Once they finish a word, the Replay button plays back the strokes in real time so they can review pen direction. Adjust speed with the slider.

How many words can I add per session?

Up to 50 cards at a time. For a longer set, finish the first deck then click "Start over" with new words.

Does it work offline?

The drawing and replay work offline once the page is loaded. Text-to-speech needs your device's built-in voices — most modern devices have them installed.
